A simplified method for estimating the total water vapor content over sea surfaces using NOAA-AVHRR channels 4 and 5

چکیده
A simplified method for estimating the total amount of atmospheric water vapor, , over sea surfaces using NOAA-AVHRR Channels 4 and 5 is presented. This study has been carried out using simulated AVHRR data at 11 and 12 m (with MODTRAN 3.5 code and the TIGR database) and AVHRR, PODAAC, and AVISO databases provided by the Louis Pasteur University (Strasbourg-France), NASA-NOAA, and Météo France, respectively. The method is named linear atmosphere–surface temperature relationship (LASTR). It is based on a linear relationship between the effective atmospheric temperature in AVHRR Channel 4 and sea surface temperature. The LASTR method was compared with the linear split-window relationship (LSWR), which is based on a linear regression between and the difference of brightness temperature measured in the same channels ( = 4 5). The results demonstrate the advantage of the LASTR method, which is capable of estimating from NOAA-14 afternoon passes with a bias accuracy of 0.5 g cm 2 and a standard deviation of 0.3 g cm , compared with the obtained by the AVISO database. In turn, a global bias accuracy of 0.1 g cm 2 and a standard deviation within 0.6 g cm 2 have been obtained in comparison with the included in the PODAAC database derived from the special sensor microwave/imager (SSM/I) instrument.

Cross Comparison of Spot-4 Vegetation and Noaa-14 Avhrr
Spectral vegetation indices obtained from satellite sensors have been used to measure and monitor the Earth’s vegetative cover from local, regional, to global scales. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) has been the most widely-used index and shown to correlate with green leaf area index, green biomass, and net primary productivity. The NDVI from the two sensors, National Oceanic ...

We report the results of a modeling study on the sensitivity of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and surface reflectance to differences in instrument spectral response functions (SRF) for various Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometers (AVHRR) onboard the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) satellites NOAA-6–16 as well as the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spect...

[1] A series of 10 advanced very high resolution radiometers (AVHRRs) flown on National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s polar-orbiting satellites for over 20 years has provided data suitable for many quantitative remote sensing applications. To be useful for geophysical research, each radiometer must be accurately calibrated, which poses problems in the AVHRR reflectance channel...
متن کاملModis Observations of Deep Convective Cloud Tops
Past studies of the NOAA AVHRR/2 and GOES I-M imagery (e.g., Setvák et al., 1996) have shown that frozen tops of deep convective storms occasionally exhibit significant increase of cloud top reflectivity when observed in the 3.7 or 3.9 μm spectral bands. Similar storm top features have been documented in the NOAA-KLM AVHRR/3 1.6 μm spectral band (Setvák et al., 2003). Consequently, cross-compar...
متن کاملComparison of Some Split-window Algorithms to Estimate Land Surface Temperature from AVHRR Data in Southeastern Tehran,
Land surface temperature (LST) is a significant parameter for many applications. Many studies have proposedvarious algorithms, such as the split-window method, for retrieving surface temperatures from two spectrallyadjacent thermal infrared bands of satellite data. Each algorithm is developed for a limited study area andapplication. In this paper, as part of developing an optimal split-window m...
